Renewing Your S.O.R.A. Certification

RENEWING SORA APPLICANTS…
WHAT TO DO!

STEP #1:
You must apply to renew your Security License with the NEW JERSEY STATE POLICE. This is an online process that can only be completed WITHIN A NINETY (90) DAY TIME FRAME FROM THE EXPIRATION DATE OF YOUR CURRENT SORA CERTIFICATION.

You must go online to the NJ State Police SORA APPLICATION PORTAL. there are two ways to get to this site:

FIRST WAY (Through the NJSP Web Site):

  1. Go to the New Jersey State Police website at: www.njsp.gov
  2. On the MAIN PAGE MENU bar, click on SERVICES. A drop down menu will appear.
  3. Go to the column labeled PRIVATE DETECTIVE UNIT, then select SORA from the list.
  4. On the SORA home page, click on the SORA APPLICANT PORTAL button.
  5. You will then be taken to the main page of the SORA APPLICATION PROCESS page

SECOND WAY (shorter):
Go directly to the SORA APPLICANT PROCESS page by following this link:
https://eapps.njsp.org/applicant/logon.do

Either way, when you get to the SORA SCREEN, it should look like this:

STEP #2:

Since you have previously created an account on this site, you will need to click on the RETURNING SORA APPLICANT button, which will then take you to the logon screen.

You will need to enter the LOGON ID and PASSWORD for your account. If you FORGOT or LOST this information, there are several links on the logon screen to help you recover your logon id and change your password.

Once you have accessed your account, you will find a menu bar at the top of the page. DO NOT CLICK ON NEW APPLICATIONS. Select either the “SECURITY OFFICER” or “ARMED SECURITY OFFICER” button (whichever applies to you) then look on the drop down menu for the SUBMIT RENEWAL option.
(NOTE: If the “SUBMIT RENEWAL” option DOES NOT APPEAR as a choice, then it is TOO EARLY to submit a SORA Renewal application….review your card’s expiration date and try again at a LATER time.)

You will be required to complete a series of questions, and will be required to provide updated information about yourself and your employment. Please remember that this is an OFFICIAL STATE APPLICATION and is subject to NJ state criminal laws for incomplete or false information.

Once you have completed submitting information, you will be required to pay the NJSP a RENEWAL APPLICATION FEE (currently $80.87) via credit card. THIS IS ONE OF TWO (2) FEES THAT YOU WILL PAY during this process. (The other is fee for the training class).

This fee includes the renewal fee of $60.00 + there is a $20.87 fingerprint check fee. You DO NOT need to be re-fingerprinted, UNLESS; 1) You have let your SORA certification lapse (expire), or 2) You are applying for a different class of certification (i.e.; being unarmed and applying for armed)

Once you have completed the application and pay the application fee, you will be issued an APPLICANT IDENTIFICATION NUMBER. This will be a six-digit number which is unique to you and MUST BE PROVIDED TO THE TRAINING SCHOOL where you enroll for your mandatory SORA training class.

STEP #3:

FINALLY, you must schedule to take an 8-Hour RENEWAL TRAINING CLASS, which is offered by LADD. There is a SEPERATE class fee of $49.00 for this class, and you must attend the ENTIRE CLASS.

Renewal students will have the option of being able to take an IN-PERSON class, or an ONLINE/VIRTUAL class. There are AM & PM classes scheduled for both class types, check our CLASS CALENDAR for the dates scheduled for each.

A review quiz & an ID photograph are required for these classes. Additional details will be provided upon registration.

Once you have completed these steps, you will receive an email within 7-business days from the NJSP notifying you of the approval or rejection of your renewal application. If approved, you will be able to download your approval letter and ID card digital via the NJSP SORA APPLICATION page by logging into your online account

REMEMBER!

  • You MUST have an Active SORA Security Officer certification, and a valid S.O.R.A. card to work as a Security Officer in New Jersey.
  • ARMED Officers must ALSO have a valid NJ PERMIT TO CARRY A HANDGUN and comply with all of the requirements of SANTIAGO’S LAW.
