Changing to Armed Status

Currently, the New Jersey State Police provide NO MECHANISM where you can change your current status from UNARMED to ARMED or Vice-Versa (ARMED to UNARMED)

You must follow the steps for a New Applicant, as outlined below

INSTRUCTIONS TO CHANGE TO ARMED CERTIFICATION STATUS

  1. You must FIRST go ONLINE to the New Jersey State Police S.O.R.A. website at: https://eapps.njsp.org/applicant/
  2. Select RETURNING S.O.R.A. APPLICANT
  3. SIGN ONTO your current S.O.R.A. account, using your current Login ID and Password
  4. Select NEW APPLICATIONS from the top menu bar
  5. In the dropdown menu, select ARMED SECURITY OFFICER CERTIFICATION (or if you wish to switch from Armed to Unarmed, select UNARMED SECURITY OFFICER CERTIFICATION
  6. Follow the steps and complete the application. You will pay another $75.00 application fee to the NJSP.
  7. After you complete your payment and application, you will receive your APPLICANT IDENTIFICATION NUMBER. This SIX-DIGIT NUMBER is the key to processing your new SORA certification.
  8. After submitting your online application, you must then schedule to be fingerprinted again by IdentoGo (another $68.98 fee applies). You must schedule your fingerprint appointment directly from SORA account & follow the instructions to make your appointment.
  9. Register for and successfully complete another 24-Hour Initial S.O.R.A. Certification class. If enrolling with LADD, please specify that you are switching from Unarmed Officer status to Armed Officer status
  10. You MUST provide your Applicant ID number to us in order for LADD to process your training. WE CANNOT PROCESS YOUR TRAINING WITHOUT THIS NUMBER!
  11. You must attend the total required hours of the class.
  12. You must pass a 50 question written exam with a minimum score of 70%.
  13. You MUST have your photograph taken by the Instructor during the class.
  14. Once you have successfully completed the process, you will be able to access your new S.O.R.A. ID card from your online S.O.R.A. account.
  15. You do not need to maintain TWO DIFFERENT cards, your ARMED S.O.R.A. card is also valid for unarmed work.
